12 Oct Oasis : What setlist for their comeback ?
Place your bets.
At the moment, little is known about this highly anticipated comeback. And since Oasis don’t give interviews, we can only rely on Liam Gallagher’s Twitter account. This morning, he revealed something quite important: Noel Gallagher will be the one to choose the setlist. Is this surprising? Not really, since the band has always worked that way. However, for this reunion, we would have liked a bit more task sharing.
But then, which songs will Noel Gallagher choose?
On August 28, the band announced that the setlist would mainly consist of hits and rock anthems. So, we can at least expect to hear Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger, Live Forever, and Supersonic. But what interests us most is knowing which song will open the concerts. Indeed, during the very first solo concert of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, the first song played was Oasis‘ (It’s Good) To Be Free. This choice was significant because the guitarist had just freed himself from a band he no longer enjoyed.
This reminds us that Oasis have a song called Hello, in which Liam Gallagher repeats ‘It’s good to be back.’ That song would be perfect for their return. Similarly, we also think of Acquiesce, a very rock song that would open the concert with a lot of energy. It’s also one of only two songs where the Gallagher brothers sing together. The second one is Let There Be Love, a song that, like Acquiesce, talks about love and, more importantly, peace. You have to admit, it would be quite iconic to see the brothers open their concerts with these songs after so many years of conflict.
Finally, still on Twitter, Liam Gallagher asked his fans to raise their hands for Underneath The Sky and Step Out to be included in the setlist. Here, we’re clearly leaning towards Underneath The Sky. Partly due to personal preference, but also because while Step Out has been played 31 times, Underneath The Sky was only performed once in 1997… on NRJ. Yes, there was a time when Oasis was played on NRJ.
