À l’occasion de la sortie de leur 7ème album, nommé simplement Bullet For My Valentine, nous avons pu discuter avec Matt Tuck, chanteur du groupe Bullet For My Valentine. Covid, santé mentale et info en avant-première sont au programme de cette interview.

Sound of Brit : La date de sortie de votre 7ème album, nommé Bullet For My Valentine, a été décalée à cause du Covid-19. Était-ce à cause de problèmes de fabrication ?

Matt Tuck : Oui, nous étions en train de tourner le nouveau clip il y a quelques semaines quand notre manager nous a annoncés que le site de fabrication où se fait toutes les versions physiques de l’album a dû fermer à cause du Covid. Nous devions choisir entre continuer comme prévu sans album physique ou bien décaler la date de sortie. Ce n’est pas très grave, il y a pire, alors nous avons décalé de quelques semaines. C’est pour le mieux.

Sound of Brit : Oui tout à fait, et il y a déjà quatre morceaux incroyables à écouter en attendant !

Matt Tuck : Le seul souci est que la tournée commence maintenant, avant que l’album ne sorte, ce n’est pas idéal. Mais nous avons déjà quatre chansons donc il y a du nouveau à écouter pour les fans.

Sound of Brit : Est-ce qu’il y aura un cinquième single avant la sortie de l’album ?

Matt Tuck : Nous aurions pu mais nous avons manqué de temps. Mais les quatre morceaux sortis sont géniaux.

Sound of Brit : Pouvez-vous nous parler du concept de l’album ? Il est plutôt différent des anciens, plus guttural et puissant notamment.

Matt Tuck : Il n’y a pas vraiment de concept. Nous l’avons créé comme chacun de nos autres albums. Nous nous sommes réunis, avons rassemblé toutes nos idées, les avons écoutées en boucle jusqu’à trouver les bonnes. Une fois que nous étions contents de la direction que ça prenait, nous avons continué en gardant ça en tête. C’était comme d’habitude pour la plupart de l’album jusqu’à mars 2020 où le monde a été affecté par le Covid et que tout s’arrête pour un temps. Heureusement pour nous, nous savions déjà ce que nous voulions pour l’album. Nous avions déjà quelques bons morceaux qui envoient du lourd. C’est pour les gens qui aiment les anciens morceaux de Bullet For My Valentine un peu plus metal. L’album leur donnera le sourire, il est très intense !

Sound of Brit : En parlant de Covid, avez-vous changé des choses ou bien tout était déjà écrit et composé ?

Matt Tuck : Entre septembre 2019 et octobre 2020 nous étions en train d’écrire et de créer, ça a commencé avant et a évolué pendant. Mais la pandémie est toujours présente, c’est un cauchemar pour tout le monde et plus particulièrement pour les groupes qui sont en tournée. C’est très difficile d’avoir des dates confirmées et tous les jours des tournées sont décalées voir annulées. C’est un moment difficile mais nous nous en sortons bien je pense. Au moins en UK nous avons notre tournée qui se vend et c’est quelque chose sur laquelle nous pouvons nous concentrer.

Sound of Brit : Êtes-vous excités à l’idée de partir en tournée à nouveau ?

Matt Tuck : Nous avons pu y goûter un peu à nouveau en juin dernier lors du pilote du Download Festival au UK. C’était notre premier concert en un an et demi, ce qui est assez peu courant pour nous. Généralement nous ne laissons pas autant de temps entre les tournées et les concerts. Mais nous avons adoré, c’était très plaisant. Il n’y a rien pouvant remplacer cette sensation. Je pense que les fans de musique en général sont des gens qui aiment beaucoup les concerts. Il faut dire que c’est une grosse partie de nos vie, c’est notre métier, ce qui nous défini, c’est notre vie. Nous sommes un peu nerveux mais vraiment impatients. Nous voulons simplement que les choses se déroulent de la meilleure des manières, sans accroc, sans que quelqu’un ne vienne à un concert en étant positif au Covid. Nous espérons vraiment que ça ira, puisque nous avons, en plus de ça, le Brexit à gérer également !

Sound of Brit : Nous avons remarqué que l’album est plutôt long. Il n’y a pas une seule musique en dessous de quatre minutes, on dirait que vous aviez beaucoup de choses a dire !

Matt Tuck: Nous avons toujours composé la musique en premier, je trouve ça impossible d’écrire des paroles sans avoir la musique au préalable. Je ne sais pas comment les autres font mais j’ai besoin de la bande sonore. Plus la chanson est intense et plus les paroles sont obscènes, plus la voix sera émotive et sombre. Il y a beaucoup de choses différentes dans l’album, liées au Covid mais aussi à des sujets plus personnels comme la santé mentale. Beaucoup de choses qui étaient dans ma têtes ces dernières années.

Sound of Brit : Le dernier single Rainbow Veins vient de sortir. Est-ce un sujet personnel pour les membres du groupe ?

Matt Tuck : Dans un sens oui, mais élevé à un niveau différent. En tant qu’auteur-compositeur et plus spécialement parolier pour le groupe, j’aime écrire des paroles émouvantes, colorées et lourdes de sens. Toutes nos chansons commencent avec un concept simple mais le côté artistique pour moi est de grossir le trait et de pousser les sujets à l’extrême. Cette chanson parle du fait de se sentir mal, d’avoir des problèmes de santé mentale et de boire et se droguer pour oublier. De faire de l’automédication pour se sentir mieux temporairement mais de savoir qu’au fond c’est un cercle vicieux et que ça n’aide pas vraiment sur le long terme. Pour résumer, c’est le sentiment de se sentir mal, de ne plus vouloir subir ça et de faire en sorte d’y échaper temporairement.

Sound of Brit : C’est ce que vous avez voulu retranscrire avec le clip de Rainbow Veins ?

Matt Tuck : Je voulais ajouter une touche un peu plus Hollywoodienne cette fois-ci. Nos clips pour cet album sont vraiment différents de tout ce que nous avons pu faire auparavant. C’est vraiment quelque chose que nous voulions, ne pas refaire la même choses encore et encore. Nous voulions du bizarre, de l’abstrait, de la couleur. Tout ça pour avoir l’attention des fans, c’est une vidéo très cru.

Sound of Brit : Comment ont réagi vos fans à ces quatre chansons sorties jusqu’à maintenant ?

Matt Tuck: Je ne suis pas vraiment du genre à rester devant l’ordinateur donc je ne sais pas trop. Mais de ce que l’on m’a dit, c’est très positif. Je pense que les fans sont beaucoup plus impliqués qu’ils ne l’ont été pour Gravity. Je pense que les gens sont très content de la direction que prend l’album. Ils vont être étonnés et choqués par l’intensité. Ils sont honnêtes et doivent le rester.

Sound of Brit : Nous savons que c’est un peu tôt pour en parler mais y a-t-il un huitième album en discussion ?

Matt Tuck : Il y en aura un oui, bien sûr. Mais dans un moment. Ce sera long pour un tas de raisons, notamment liées aux restrictions, chaque pays en est à un stade différent donc ça prend du temps. Et puis je veux présenter ce septième album sur scène comme il se doit, là où il mérite d’être joué. Cela prendra le temps qu’il faut, je pense que ça ne sera pas avant 2024 au plus tôt. Mais c’est plutôt normal trois ans entre deux albums.

Sound of Brit : Des featurings de prévu dans le futur ?

Matt Tuck : C’est une possibilité, nous sommes en train de travailler sur un morceau qui sortira entre les deux albums. Peut-être l’été prochain. Et oui nous avons quelqu’un en tête pour être notre invité vocal sur le morceau mais nous ne pouvons pas donner de nom. Nous sommes très excités car c’est probablement quelque chose d’inattendu. Les gens vont être surpris parce que ça n’est vraiment pas ce à quoi ils vont s’attendre. Nous espérons de tout coeur que ça se fasse.

We were able to chat with Matt Tuck, singer of the group Bullet For My Valentine for the release of their 7th album, simply named Bullet For My Valentine. Covid, mental health and premium info are part of this interview.

Sound of Brit: The release date for your 7th album, named Bullet For My Valentine, has been postponed due to a Covid issues. Is it related to some manufacturing issues ?

Matt Tuck: Yeah ! When we were doing the shooting of the new video clip a few weeks ago, management said that the manufacturing place in the states where they’re printing out all the physical copies had to shut down on that day because of Covid. So we either go ahead as planned, without any physical albums, or we have to put it back. It’s not the biggest deal in the world, you know, it is what it is, so we just put it back a couple of weeks. It’s for the best.

Sound of Brit: Yes it is, and there are already four awesome singles out, four killing tracks to listen to in the meantime.

Matt Tuck: Yeah, but the only thing downside for us was that our tour starts now, before the record is out, which is like not ideal. But we do have the four songs out anyway, so at least there is new new stuff to get involved with, you know.

Sound of Brit: Will there be a fifth one before the release date ?

Matt Tuck: It was going to be but I think we just went up like we’ve run out of time, really, so I think the four tracks that we released are great.

Sound of Brit: Can you talk a bit more about the concept of the album ? It’s pretty different from the previous ones, more gutural and heavy.

Matt Tuck: There’s no real concept code into it, you know. We just approached it like we have every single album cycle. We just get together, we throw as many ideas as we can and put it down. Listen back and kind of just get into the swing of writing music. Then, once we’re really excited about the concrete direction of what we want them to be we just carry on with that in mind. So it was business as usual for the most part, up until March 2020 obviously when the world shut down and everything had to stop for a while. But you know, fortunately, we already knew where the album was going. We already had a couple of key tracks which kind of put us in the right direction. And yeah it’s definitely heavy, you know it doesn’t mess around. It’s for people who like the heavier side of music and the heavier side of Bullet For My Valentine. This one is gonna make them smile, it’s pretty intense, it’s a big record yeah.

Sound of Brit: Talking about Covid, did you change some things in the album during those times or was it already all written down ?

Matt Tuck: Between September 2019 and October 2020 we were still writing and still creating so it has started pre and went all the way through to now still. Pandemic still going on, it’s a nightmare for everyone, especially being in a touring band, it’s very difficult to get towards confirmed dates and daily tours being postponed and moved and cancel. It’s a scary time you know, but yeah we’re doing allright it seems. You know here in the UK at least we got a tour which do really well. At least that’s something for us to focus on for a minute you know.

Sound of Brit: Are you excited to go on tour again ?

Matt Tuck: We had a little taste of it in June, we played a show at Download Festival pilot. That was our first show in a year and a half, which is very unusual for us, you know we usually don’t leave as much time between shows and between tours but we got a little taste of it and it felt so good man. There’s no substitute for that you know. I think the music fans in general qualifies as people that like live shows. They’ve missed this, it’s a big part of existing and it is especially for us. It’s our profession, our labeling and it’s our life. We’re a little nervous but excited. We just wanted to go smooth, we just don’t want any kind of curveballs last minute with someone coming down with covid, it’s stressful. Hopefully there’s no bumps and restrictions because we’ve got brexit as well.

Sound of Brit: We have noticed that this album is a pretty long one. There’s no music under four minutes long, seems like you had a lot to talk about.

Matt Tuck: We always write the music first you know, I find it impossible to write lyrics without it. I don’t understand how people do it. I need soundtrack, feel all the emotions that I get from the music to be able to write vocals. So the heavier the song and nastier the lyrics are, the more emotive and dark vocals are going to be. There’s lots of different things on there, there’s covid related stuff, there’s personal stuff with mental health issues. You know it’s just a whole bunch of stuff that has just been in my head for the last year and a half.

Sound of Brit: The latest single rainbow veins just got out. Is this also a personnal subject for the band ?

Matt Tuck: In a way, but it’s taken to a different level you know. As a songwriter, especially as a lyricist for the band, I really like to write colorful, emotive, big lyrics. Like all songs will start with a simple concept, but I think the art form, then, for me, is to make it as grand, as visual and as, in some cases, extreme as possible. So that song is basically about feeling down, having mental health issues and just drinking and taking drugs to kind of get over it, self medicating with alcohol or whatever to kind of make you feel better temporarily. But then you just enter this cycle of shit and it doesn’t really help long term. That’s what the song is about. In a nutshell it’s about feeling in a bad place and not wanting to be there anymore and doing things that temporary let you escape.

Sound of Brit: That’s what the clip is about for Rainbow Veins ?

Matt Tuck: I wanted to go down a bit more narrative Hollywood roots. Our music videos of this cycle are very different to anything we’ve done before. That’s definitely something we wanted to do as we didn’t want to do stuff we’ve done in the past. We wanted to just be weird and abstract and colorful. To get people’s reactions, it’s a weird video, very raw.

Sound of Brit: How did the fans react to the four singles already out ?

Matt Tuck: I’m not a guy that sits in front of a computer so I wouldn’t know. But from what i’m told it’s going very well. I think the fans are a lot more engaged this time around as they were on gravity. I think people are really excited by the direction it’s going in. They’ll be shocked because of how intense it is and they’re be building up anticipation and excitement. They’re honest, and they should be.

Sound of Brit: We know it’s a little soon to talk about that, but is there a eighth album on the way ?

Matt Tuck: There will be, of course. But in a distant time. It’s gonna be a long cycle for many reasons. We have the restrictions globally, every country’s in a different place so it’s going to take a while. I want to showcase this seventh album on the stage, where that’s meant to be. It deserves to be performed, so it takes as long as it takes. I can’t see it coming before 2024 at the very earliest. But that’s not unusual to have a three year cycle. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Sound of Brit: Any featuring that may happen in the future ?

Matt Tuck: That is possibly something that we are working on as an extra track. We have leftover that we want to release as a post album single at some point, maybe next summer. And yes we’ve got our eye on someone as a guest vocalist that we want to perform on it, but I can’t say the name. Very exciting. It’s probably a bit of a curveball when it does happen, when it gets announced it’ll probably spin people a little bit because it’s isn’t the people you think it would be. Hopefully it works out.
