14 Mai INTERVIEW – Dermot Kennedy on his new single Something to Someone
Dermot Kennedy just launched his new single Something to Someone. He talked to us about what it means to him and what he’s been up to these past few months.
Your new single Something to Someone was released on may the 5th. How do you feel about it?
Dermot : I feel good. Yeah, I feel very excited. I wrote this song a long time ago and it kind of felt important straight away. And it felt like something. It felt like a good step forward for me, creatively. But also, it felt like it was very true to who I am as a person and as an artist. And I’m just very excited.
What was your main inspiration for this song?
Dermot : I think for this song, the main idea is just not taking anything for granted. You know, I think life moves so quickly and especially in music, like out of nowhere. Now, I’ve sort of had a career in music for, like, five or six years, which is just a blur, and it’s kind of in the blink of an eye. And so I think it’s very important for us to really sit in those special moments and to and to take them in and to really experience them, because you don’t get that again. You know what I mean? So it’s important to really be present as much as you can.
You have a busy summer with your own tour and the one with Shawn Mendez. Are you nervous ? Excited ?
Dermot : A bit of both. Yeah. I’m lucky enough with the shows. For whatever reason, when I go on stage, I don’t get nervous, but I do get excited. I’m just really looking forward to it. I think it’s just been a long time. We were lucky enough to play quite a few shows last year, the second half of last year, but it almost feels as if that was just like, two days or something. And it feels like this summer and beyond is like a real return to touring.
You think that your experience will be different from last year?
Dermot : Yeah, I think so. And it’ll be nice to have the new song out. I have to say I’m really grateful because people have come back to see us again and again, and I’m just excited to give them something new.
People did not forgot about music during these times obviously.
Dermot : No, definitely not. I mean, it’s cool because there was a lot of time there where it was hard to know if live music was going to come back at all, or if it was going to be like this year or next year or the year after that, like we never really knew. And so I think artists are really, really grateful to be playing shows again. And supporters are just really grateful to be able to experience it again. Even for me, like I’ve been going to more shows now than I have in years because it just it feels nice to see people do their thing.
What shows did you go to?
Dermot : I was lucky to go to Arcade Fire in New York in a room of about 300 people. They played the Bowery Ballroom in New York. And so it was just this tiny show and a really beautiful thing.
Awesome ! Can we expect concert dates for France soon?
Dermot : Yeah, I think so. Well, it’s funny because one of my songs Power Over Me went platinum in France yesterday and I had a lot of messages from people being like « you never play France » and I was like, « Well, I kind of do as well », but I’ll get back as quick as I can. We’ve got some good shows there to be honest, and it’s just nice. It’s just a beautiful city to visit, even whether you’re playing a show or not. It’s often at the end of tours for us, which is really beautiful. It’s just a nice way to wrap up the tour. And we’ve always had good shows there.
Can you tell us if you are currently working on something new?
Dermot : Definitely. Yeah. I’m working on new stuff every day, and I’m very close to being finished with this album. I’m at that point now where I’m just listening to different mixes and making final adjustments. And then, the album will be ready for the world, which is very exciting. So I got a lot of stuff.
